5★ Review: A Day at Harewood House -The Most Magical Christmas Experience in Yorkshire

I had been desperate to visit Harewood House at Christmas. As soon as the festive season began creeping in, I found myself craving that feeling of sparkle and calm that only December seems to bring. The house had been on my list for years, and this year I finally made it happen. Christmas is my favourite time of year — not just for the lights and decorations, but for the sense of togetherness it brings. With work and life feeling busier than ever, I had been counting down the days to spend some quiet, quality time with Lily. Just the two of us. No distractions, no rushing, no noise — only laughter, hot chocolate, and that special kind of magic that happens when you slow down and see Christmas through your child’s eyes.

Here’s how we got on…

The Christmas Market: Independent Stalls and Festive Joy

There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of a good Christmas market. The twinkle of fairy lights, the sound of carols and the comforting scent of cinnamon and pine make everything feel special. Harewood House’s market was pure joy. It was the perfect size to wander at leisure, with a wonderful mix of artisan stalls and seasonal treats.

We spent a happy hour pottering around, chatting with stallholders and admiring the creativity behind each display. I treated myself to some bath salts and a Christmas-scented soap that smelt of cloves and orange peel, while Lily proudly picked out a crystal she said would help her relax and be calm.

We found thoughtful gifts for friends and family that felt far more meaningful than anything mass-produced. Eventually we stopped for food, sharing a delicious chicken masala that was rich, warming and full of flavour. We ate beneath strings of fairy lights while music drifted across the courtyard.

The House: A Fairytale Come to Life

Stepping inside Harewood House felt like walking into a storybook. I have visited many stately homes, but none compare to this one for its blend of grandeur and warmth. Every corridor glowed with light and every room felt alive with festive energy.

The decorations were breathtaking. Enormous Christmas trees stood tall in each room, garlands cascaded down staircases and dining tables glittered with crystal and silverware. The entire house seemed to hum with magic.

Lily loved the children’s dressing room where she twirled in vintage-style outfits and imagined herself as a young heiress. Soft violin music played modern songs, giving the whole experience a cinematic quality that reminded me of Bridgerton.

The staff were equally wonderful, friendly and relaxed and happy to go the extra mile. When Lily suddenly needed the toilet, they quietly guided us through a back passage so she would not have to queue. Small touches like that make the experience feel personal and memorable.

The Terrace: Hot Chocolate and Conversation

After exploring the house, we went to the terrace café for hot chocolate piled high with whipped cream and sprinkled with cocoa. The prices were pleasantly reasonable, which is always a welcome surprise on family days out.

We sat outside and admired the view of rolling lawns, woodland and the glittering lake. The air was cold but fresh, and for a few moments everything felt wonderfully still.

Lily and I chatted about life, Christmas and the people who once lived in houses like this. I quizzed her on upper-class living and she laughed at the idea of ballroom dances and servants. It was funny and touching in equal measure and one of those quiet, grounding moments that stay with you long after the day ends.

The Grounds: Lakes, Gardens and a Christmas Soundtrack

No visit to Harewood House is complete without a walk around its beautiful grounds. The gardens are vast and varied, with the lake at their heart reflecting the light like silver glass. As we wandered along the paths we discovered a brass band playing Christmas songs. The music drifted through the cold air and gathered a small crowd of smiling families.

We stayed to listen for a while, then continued exploring, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the faint scent of woodsmoke. Lily finished the day with a long play in the adventure playground, an incredible wooden structure that fits naturally into the surroundings. It challenges older children while remaining safe and inviting for younger ones.

By the time we left, our cheeks were pink from the cold and our boots were muddy. It was the kind of contented tiredness that only follows a perfect winter day outdoors.

Reflection: A Day I Will Remember Forever

As we drove home, the car filled with the scent of soap, chocolate and pine, I could not stop smiling. Harewood House had exceeded every expectation. It was not only beautiful but emotionally nourishing.

Days like this remind me why I love family experiences so much. They help me feel connected to Lily, to the season and to myself. In a life that often feels busy and rushed, spending a slow, magical day together brings a deep sense of peace.

This will absolutely become a yearly tradition for us. Harewood House at Christmas is more than a day out. It is a story you step into.If you are looking for an experience filled with beauty, warmth and wonder, this is one you will never forget.
