5★ Review: Pontefract Castle, West Yorkshire

Pontefract Castle has been on our list for a while, and their Halloween event gave us the perfect excuse to visit. With witches brewing potions, wand-making workshops, and trails to explore, it was the perfect mix of history, imagination, and family fun. Find out how we got on below.

Background & Atmosphere

Pontefract is one of those towns that feels instantly welcoming — cobbled streets, independent shops, and that unmistakable Yorkshire warmth. The castle sits high above the town, surrounded by sweeping green fields and peaceful views that seem to go on forever. It’s the perfect mix of history and fresh air, and one of those rare places where both kids and grown-ups can genuinely relax.

When we visited, Lily and Noah were dressed as Harry and Hermione, racing around the ruins casting spells and pretending they’d found the real Hogwarts. Pontefract Castle lends itself to that kind of imaginative play — with secret tunnels, stone archways, and towers that spark stories about kings, knights and battles. There’s something truly lovely about watching your children run free in a place that’s stood for hundreds of years.

Even without an event on, it’s worth visiting just for the atmosphere. You can wander at your own pace, take in the history boards, enjoy a picnic on the grass, and soak up the feeling that this is a place where memories have been made for generations.

Events & Activities

Our visit happened to coincide with a special Halloween-themed day — and it couldn’t have been more magical. The castle grounds were filled with witches performing brilliant demonstrations: brewing potions, casting spells, and entertaining the children with interactive stories.

There were also plenty of things to do around the greenery, from simple outdoor games to watching the witches in action. Inside the visitor hub, the craft tables were busy with children making wands, designing their own leaf witches, and chatting to staff who clearly loved what they do.

It struck the perfect balance between fun and learning — the kind of event that keeps everyone engaged without feeling rushed or crowded.

What Else to Expect

Beyond the event itself, there’s so much to explore. The castle ruins are impressive, with information boards dotted around explaining the history in bite-sized chunks that kids can actually understand. The play area is brilliant too — modern, well kept and close enough for parents to grab a drink from the café while keeping an eye on the little ones.

There are bat and nature trails to follow, and plenty of open space for running, exploring, or simply sitting in the sunshine. We said we’d definitely return in the summer if another event is on, as it’s one of those places that feels different each time you visit.

Tips for Families

  • Entry is completely free, which makes it such an easy, affordable family day out.
  • Pack a picnic and blanket — there are loads of grassy areas with stunning views.
  • Keep an eye on their website or Facebook page for upcoming themed events.
  • Don’t miss the visitor centre if it rains — there’s plenty to do indoors.

Final Thoughts

Pontefract Castle is one of those hidden gems that reminds you the best days out don’t have to cost a thing. It’s full of history, imagination and Yorkshire charm — a perfect blend of learning, laughter, and fresh air. We’ll definitely be back again soon.
